Kat The Hat Lady...
Kat The Hat Lady....
Let me introduce myself, I am Kat Hazelton better known as Kat the hat lady and I am a designer and maker of 1/12th scale miniature hats
History
I have been making my little hats as a professional maker and as a hobby for many, many years, it’s a real passion of mine. Crafts are in our family blood my great uncle was an artist, my Nan use to sort and dye feathers for milliners and my Mum was a chair re-caner. I used to spend a lot of my time as a child attending art and craft fairs. When I left school I worked in various professions including working as a chef, admin assistant, secret shopper, cake decorator, various positions for shops including working in a chocolate shop and a dolls house. But I never felt really happy! So I decided to study full size Millinery at York College for two years. During my studies I got myself a job as a milliner in a Millinery shop providing hats for weddings, funerals, garden parties and Royal Ascot. I enjoyed working in a hat shop but I really wanted to work for myself and create my own hats. Being unable to afford the large expensive hat blocks to create full size hats, I decided to make my hats in miniature instead, selling them through various outlets including shops, eBay, Etsy and at Dolls House fairs.
I create my hats using my own hat blocks and patterns and spend a great deal of my time researching millinery in old books, fashion plates, and visiting libraries and museums. I make all sorts of hats from historical hats to fantasy hats including Zombie, Steam punk, Gothic and witches hats! I always use the highest quality fabrics and trimmings some of which are vintage. I have done many commissions over the years including making hats for museum displays, wedding cake decorations, costumers and dolls makers. My work has appeared in various publications including local newspapers, Dolls House World, American Miniaturist and Dolls House and Miniature Scene. I have also written tutorials on hat making as well as giving talks and demonstrations on the subject of millinery.
2010 I started my own facebook group called ‘The Miniature Witches’ where all my miniature friends meet up to chat about unusual miniatures. I also have a new blog site were I not only show my new creations but show off my friends work, have regular giveaways, tutorials, and lots of chat about my interests in not just hats but costume, films, theatre, and my interest in Witches!
